A scholarship is an award of financial aid for a student who wishes to continue their education beyond high school. Most scholarships are awarded based on merit or talent but some are awarded based on need. The money received as a scholarship, unlike student loans, does not have to be reimbursed.

Each type of scholarship has various criteria for you to qualify. Read these carefully so you do not waste your time applying for a scholarship that you do not qualify for. Some scholarships may have age requirements, others may be offered to single parents or enlisted persons, veterans and their families. Pay particular attention to these criteria!

If you are a high school student who is interested in scholarship opportunities your best resource is your school guidance counselor who will be able to recommend local companies and institutions that offer scholarships in your area.

Most academic scholarships require you to write an essay, as part of the application, outlining the reasons why you deserve to receive this scholarship. Your ability to write a clear well written essay could be your ticket to success!!

Focus your response to the question being asked. You may be asked about your biggest achievements, toughest challenges, or your goals for the future.

Make sure you emphasize how awarding you the scholarship will benefit them in the future by describing how you will use the scholarship funds.

As with any essay, there should be no grammatical errors or spelling mistakes, so make sure you proof read it carefully before sending it in.
