Almost every high school in North America offers some type of extracurricular activity, such as music, academic clubs, and sports. These activities offer opportunities for students to learn the values of teamwork, individual and group responsibility, physical strength and endurance, competition, diversity, and a sense of culture and community.
High School Extra Curricular Activities
High School Volunteer Opportunities
High Schools offer a number of events throughout the year where they need student volunteers to help organize and run the event. For example students can get involved in parent teacher evenings, charity events, and sporting events.
High School Academic Clubs
If you have a passion for a particular subject in school and you are interested in further activity beyond the classroom you may want to join an academic club. You may get the opportunity to represent your high school at regional or national competitions. Some examples of academic clubs are robotics or the debate team. If there isn’t an existing club for your interest you may be able to start one!
High School Student Council
The student council helps share students’ ideas, interests, and concerns with teachers and school principals. They help raise funds for school-wide events such as prom, community projects, and school reform. Participating in your student council will help you to learn about teamwork, democracy, and leadership skills.
High School Music Band
Learning to play an instrument is a life long skill and if you are passionate about music most high schools have band practice where you learn to play different styles of music, put on concerts, perform at sporting events or local community events.
High School Drama Club
For high school students who enjoy acting or singing there is usually a drama club you can join. Each year the school chooses a play which they perform in front of their peers, teachers, parents and friends. You don’t have to be an actor to get involved with this one as they also need people for lighting, music, set and costume design.
High School Sports Teams
High school offers teenagers the chance to explore opportunities in a broad range of sports and physical activities. Those of you who want to pursue athletic excellence can try out for a sports team and if successful you can represent your school at regional competitions. Regular activity will not only help you maintain a healthy body weight but also give you the opportunity to develop life long skills.
Participation in extracurricular activities is a privilege and students may have to meet and maintain a minimum grade point average to play sports or take part in clubs.
Overall, students who participate in extracurricular activities will likely see an improvement in their academic and life skills, including discipline, goal-setting, teamwork, accountability and responsibility.
